Rubber Band Bracelets

Create colorful stretchy bracelets by linking small rubber bands together. Also known as loom bands, this craft produces quick results and endless design possibilities. Make friendship bracelets, keychains, or even small figures with simple techniques.

What You'll Do

Create a basic chain or rubber band bracelet using fingers or a simple loom.

What You Need

Required

  • Rubber loom bands (pack)($5-8)
  • C-clips or S-clips (usually included)($0)

Optional

  • Two pencils (alternative to loom)($0)
  • Rainbow loom or mini loom($8-15)

How To Do It

  1. 1

    Set up your workspace

You can use your fingers, two pencils held together, or a loom. For finger method, use your index and middle finger on your non-dominant hand.

  2. 2

    Start the basic chain

Twist one band into a figure-8 and place on two fingers (or pegs). Add a second band on top without twisting. Pull the bottom band up and over both fingers to the center. Add another band and repeat.

  3. 3

    Continue the pattern

Keep adding bands and looping the bottom one over. Always have two bands on your fingers. The chain grows below your fingers. Continue until it fits around your wrist (about 20-25 bands).

  4. 4

    Try the fishtail pattern

Similar to basic chain, but keep THREE bands on your fingers at all times. Only loop the bottom band over. This creates a thicker, more textured bracelet.

  5. 5

    Finish your bracelet

When long enough, stop adding bands. Loop the remaining bands over until one is left. Stretch this final band and attach both ends to a . Connect the clip to the starting band to close the bracelet.

Tips

  • Start with the basic chain pattern - master it before trying complex designs.
  • Common mistake: bands too loose. Keep consistent tension so your bracelet isn't floppy.
  • Count your bands to ensure both sides of the bracelet are even length.
  • Quality matters - cheap bands break easily and are frustrating. Rainbow Loom brand bands work well.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bands do I need for one bracelet?

About 20-25 bands for a child's bracelet, 25-30 for adults. The pattern uses more bands than the basic chain.

Can I make bracelets without a loom?

Yes! Use your fingers or two pencils held side by side. Many patterns work fine without a loom. The loom just makes complex designs easier.

Why do my bands keep breaking?

Either the bands are low quality, or you're stretching them too much. Use name-brand bands and don't over-stretch during looping.

What's the easiest pattern to start with?

The basic single chain is easiest - just two bands at a time. Once comfortable, try the (three bands). Then explore ladder and starburst patterns.

Can I make things other than bracelets?

Yes! Keychains, rings, small figures, phone charms, and even small purses. YouTube has tutorials for hundreds of designs.
